Top Signs that Your Shingles Need to be Replaced

Shingles are the first line of defense for a roof against the elements, animals, and other destructive forces. When you’re in the market for new shingles, roof repair, new roof installation, or a full roof replacement, the experienced team at Phil DiBello Family Roofing invites you to check out our services. Family owned since 1979, we are proud to provide the very best in roof repair and replacement.

It is often difficult to know when shingles need replacing or a new roof installation is needed. Our team is dedicated to keeping you informed, safe, and aware.

Moss, Fungi, and Mold

If you notice moss, fungi, or mold growing on your roof, it may be a sign that you need new shingles. These organisms grow in humid, moisture-laden environments. Over time, they can lift shingles up and prevent proper drainage. This will eventually cause leaks in the roof.

Curling

Curling can occur when the shingles dry out, become brittle, or have been subjected to high winds. Not only does it make a roof look bad, curling also allows for water to leak through and cause damage to your home.

Missing Granules

Granules are the rough, grainy, sand-like material that coats the surface of shingle. Over time, these granules (which protect the asphalt from the sun’s harsh effects) wear away and that can allow water, moisture, and debris to enter the inner area of the roof. If you notice dark spots on light-colored shingles or light spots on dark-colored shingles, that could signal serious granule loss.

Water Stains

If you start to notice water spots or streaks on your ceilings or walls, this likely means your shingles have worn out their welcome. It’s a good idea to call a roofing professional as soon as you notice water spots to prevent more serious water damage.

Age of the Roof

Even if your roof has no visible damage, when it’s older than 14–15 years, you should consider having a roof inspection. Most roofs will last up to 20 years, but the lifespan of your roof depends on the climate and region in which you live.

Missing Shingles

The most obvious sign you need your shingles replaced is if you notice some have gone missing, or start finding pieces of asphalt in your yard. Whether caused by a storm, age, or other factors, missing shingles are definitely a cause for concern and a roofing contractor should be consulted.
